Why pitch shifting sounds distorted
Pitch shifting sounds distorted because the algorithm has to reconstruct the recording at a new height. Reconstruction can color the result even when the source is clean, and large shifts make artifacts more likely.
After reconstruction itself, check extreme shifts, dense mixes and transients, a weak or already clipped source, and output clipping, in that order. Pitch Changer uses Signalsmith Stretch for preview and WAV export, keeps about 10% headroom, and still cannot promise lossless or artifact-free audio.

What usually produces the artifact

Algorithm reconstruction
A pitch shifter has to estimate output samples that represent the source at a different musical height. Even a modest shift rebuilds timing and phase relationships. Some smear, grain, or “plastic” tone can appear on exposed notes when the source itself is clean.

Extreme shifts
The farther you move from 0 semitones, the harder the processor has to work to preserve the source while moving its frequencies. Jumps toward an octave (±12) or the tool limits (±24) are the first settings to reduce. Fine-tune cents make a smaller change than a full key jump.

Complex mixes and transients
Stacked vocals, cymbals, consonants, and other fast attacks are harder to rebuild than a single sustained tone. A full mix can sound worse than the same shift on a dry vocal or bass DI. Loop the revealing bar, not the quiet intro.

Source file problems
A low-rate MP3, an already shifted file, or a recording with noise and pumping will still be that file after a shift. Pitch shifting does not restore lost high end or undo a previous export. Prefer the least-compressed original you have, within the 80 MB picker limit.

Clipping and hot peaks
If the source is already clipped, shifting will not repair the flattened peaks. Pitch Changer keeps about 10% output headroom (gain 0.9) so the processor itself is less likely to add a new clip, but it cannot unclip the input or promise a cleaner master.
Signalsmith Stretch’s design notes describe two relevant engineering limits: higher pitch shifts make frequency aliasing harder to control, and time stretching can smear transients. Those mechanisms explain why reducing Pitch and resetting Tempo are useful isolation tests.
Checklist
Diagnose in order, then decide whether to export
Check 1
Grain grows as the semitone value grows
Return to -1 / +1 or a few cents and compare it with the extreme value. If the grain mostly disappears, the size of the shift is the likely cause. Keep the smallest setting that solves the musical problem.
Check 2
Smear appears only when Tempo also changes
Set Tempo back to 100% and listen again. Time stretching has its own transient smear. If the distortion remains, treat it as a pitch-shift artifact. If it mostly vanishes, the tempo change was the larger problem.
Check 3
Cymbals, consonants, or exposed notes sound worst
Mark an A–B range of at least 0.25 seconds around that moment. Full-track playback can hide a short artifact. Preview uses the same Signalsmith settings as export, so this loop is the quality check that matters.
Check 4
Crackle or flattened peaks exist before the shift
Use a cleaner WAV or higher-rate copy of the same performance when you have one. The processor cannot restore clipped peaks or MP3 detail that the source has already lost. A browser decode failure is a separate format problem.
Check 5
A voice sounds hollow or unnaturally small
Reduce the shift and compare again. Pitch Changer does not expose formant controls, so it cannot independently restore the vocal timbre after a large move. Export only when the preview is good enough for the rehearsal, cover, or scratch copy you need.

Limits
What cannot be guaranteed
Matched preview and export, independent Tempo, and 0.9 output gain are real controls. They are not a mastering chain, a formant restorer, or a clipped-file repair tool. Do not expect a heavy MP3 of a dense mix, shifted by an octave, to come back as a clean studio take.
The working audio stays in the current browser tab. Reloading clears the session. Keep the original file; a disappointing WAV is still a new copy, not an overwrite.

Why does pitch shifting sound distorted even at small settings?
Because the processor is rebuilding the waveform, not moving a tape. A small shift can still color sibilants or cymbals. That does not mean the file was uploaded or that export uses a different engine from preview.
Will a larger shift always sound worse?
Usually, yes. Larger semitone jumps ask for more reconstruction. It is not a strict law for every source—some simple tones survive +7 better than a busy mix survives +2—but starting smaller is the most reliable test.
Can I fix a clipped or low-quality MP3 by shifting it?
No. Shifting will not restore clipped peaks or missing MP3 detail. Use a cleaner source if you have one. The export is a new 16-bit WAV of whatever the browser decoded.
Does the live preview match the downloaded WAV?
Pitch Changer uses the same Signalsmith configuration for live preview and offline export, with the same 0.9 output gain. Small differences can still come from audio-frame rounding, but you should not treat preview as a different, prettier engine.
Is lossless or artifact-free pitch shifting available here?
No. The page does not promise lossless, perfect, or artifact-free results. Headroom and matched preview/export reduce avoidable damage; they do not remove the physics of reconstruction.
