Pitch vs tempo

Pitch is how high or low the recording sounds. Tempo is how quickly it progresses and therefore how long the file lasts. They are not the same control.

On Pitch Changer they stay independent: Pitch from -24 to +24 semitones, optional Fine tune from -50 to +50 cents, and Tempo from 50% to 200%. If you only need a new speed and the original key must stay put, use Audio Speed Changer, which locks pitch at zero semitones. If you need a new key, or both a new key and a new pace, stay on Pitch Changer.

Definitions

ControlChangesLeaves independentUse it when
PitchHow high or low the mixed file sounds. A semitone shift transposes tonal material by that interval.Tempo and duration stay at the Tempo setting you chose. The song is in the wrong key for a voice, instrument, or rehearsal plan.
TempoHow fast the audio progresses, and how long the exported WAV lasts. The selected pitch shift stays in place instead of following the speed change.A phrase is too fast to hear, or a copy must fit a shorter slot, without selecting a new key.
Tape-style speedSpeed, duration, and pitch move together, like a faster or slower tape or record.Neither pitch nor tempo is held still. You want that linked effect. Pitch Changer does not expose a tape-speed mode; Slowed + Reverb does link speed and pitch.

Examples

  • Transpose, keep the groove

Pitch -2, Tempo 100%. The mix drops a whole step. Duration stays with the original, so a 3:00 song is still about 3:00. This is the usual karaoke or capo case.

  • Slow practice in the original key

Pitch 0, Tempo 80%. Timing stretches; the export lasts about 1.25 times as long. The musical pitch setting stays at the original. Audio Speed Changer is the focused tool for this pattern.

  • New key and extra time

Pitch -2, Tempo 80%. Both qualities move because you set both controls. If the result sounds smeared, set Tempo back to 100% to hear whether the pitch shift alone is acceptable.

A 120 BPM reference slowed to 90 BPM is a 75% rate. Pitch Changer will not compute that from the audio; you either set 75% by ear or use the Speed Changer calculator with two BPM values you already know.

Mix-ups

  • “Slow it down” does not have to mean “make it lower.” Independent tempo keeps the key. Linked tape speed lowers both.
  • Changing pitch does not detect or rewrite BPM. Neither Pitch Changer nor Audio Speed Changer analyzes the file for tempo. BPM Finder estimates BPM and key on a different page, and those estimates can be ambiguous.
  • Slowed + Reverb is not a substitute for independent controls. It exists when you want speed and pitch to fall together, with an optional reverb mix.
  • A cents tweak is still pitch, not tempo. Fine tune does not change duration. If the file got longer, Tempo moved.

Tools

Use Pitch Changer when the key should change, including the case where Tempo stays at 100%. Use Audio Speed Changer when timing should change and pitch lock must stay on. Follow the how-to if you already know you need a transpose and want the file-to-WAV steps.

This comparison page does not process audio. Use Pitch Changer to apply a key change, or Audio Speed Changer for speed-only work.

FAQ

Definitions, duration, BPM, and which tool owns the next action.

Does changing pitch change tempo?

Not on Pitch Changer. Pitch and Tempo are separate controls. A semitone shift can hold Tempo at 100%, so duration stays with the original. Tape-style playback speed would move both together; this tool does not expose that linked mode.

Can I change tempo without changing pitch?

Yes. Set Pitch and Fine tune to zero, then move Tempo between 50% and 200%. Audio Speed Changer does the same job with pitch locked at zero semitones and an optional BPM ratio calculator. Use that page when you never want a key change.

Which tool should I use for a BPM change?

If you already know the original and target BPM and the key must stay the same, use Audio Speed Changer. It divides target by original and accepts the result only between 50% and 200%. It does not detect BPM. Pitch Changer can change tempo too, but it also exposes pitch, which is easy to move by mistake when you only wanted timing.

Why does duration change when I slow a song down?

Tempo is a rate. At 50%, the export lasts about twice as long; at 200%, about half as long. Pitch does not own that math. Estimated duration beside the file updates when Tempo moves.

Is Slowed + Reverb the same as independent pitch and tempo?

No. Slowed Reverb lowers speed and pitch together on purpose, then can add reverb. Use it for that linked effect. Use Pitch Changer when key and timing must be chosen separately.
